Janet Sarai Llerandi Gonzalez was elected onto the Bend LaPine School District Board in May of 2021. Gonzalez quotes and promotes Communist leader, Angela Davis, on the Bend LaPine School District website. In her district biography, Gonzalez uses the words of Davis as her “personal quote” of choice. The quote, “We have to talk about liberating minds as well as liberating society,” is one of Davis’ most famous. Davis is a militant American black activist who gained an international reputation during her imprisonment and trial on conspiracy charges in 1970–72. Davis ran for Vice President of the United States as a candidate from the Communist Party USA in 1980 and 1984. When reached out for comment, the Bend LaPine School District supported Gonzalez’s quote of choice and stated she was elected into the position by a majority vote. When asked if it was an appropriate use of district resources to promote a controversial political party leader on a historically bi-partisan district site, the district made no comment.
