The Abilene ISD Board of Directors is made up of seven members elected to serve 4-year terms. Elections are held biennially.

President

Daryl Zeller was elected to the Abilene ISD Board of Trustees in 2016.
Daryl has been a resident of Abilene since 1980. Born in Casper, Wyoming, and raised in Fort Worth, Daryl is the son of the late Jack and Dorothy Zeller. He is a product of the Fort Worth ISD system and a 1980 graduate of Paschal High School. Daryl received his BBA in Finance from Abilene Christian University in 1984.

Daryl and his wife, Rebekah (Gibbs) Zeller, have four children, all proud students of AISD. Rebekah is a 1980 graduate of Cooper High School and daughter of the late JB Gibbs and Winnie Gibbs, both AISD retirees. Daryl and Rebekah’s children have all attended Austin Elementary, Lincoln/Mann Middle School and graduated from Abilene High School – Grant ’07, Suzanne 09’, Peter 12’ and Abigail will be graduating in 17’. All have earned their degrees from ACU and are currently serving in some form of student/children ministry across Texas and in Costa Rica.

Daryl serves as an Account Representative for Ethicon Surgical Care, a division of Johnson &amp; Johnson. He provides products, training and instruction to various surgical specialties through out the West Texas area including Abilene, San Angelo, Brownwood, Midland and Odessa. He has served in this capacity for 24 years and previously worked in the financial sector in Banking and Bank Accounting/Transaction technology sales for the NCR Corporation.

Daryl has received numerous sales awards and leadership recognition with Johnson &amp; Johnson, the prestigious Johnson &amp; Johnson Standard of Leadership Award, numerous peer leadership awards and a recipient sales excellence awards.

Daryl has been an active participant in the Abilene community as a youth coach, board member and supporter of numerous youth leagues in the community. Daryl has served as President of Austin Elementary PTA, Lincoln Middle School PTA and VP of Mann Middle School PTA. He has served as President of AHS Booster Club for five years and has been on the board for 10 years. He has served on the Abilene Education Foundation Board and Advisory Board. He has also volunteered with Key City Kiwanis, Junior Achievement and Young Life Abilene.

Daryl and his wife Rebekah are members at Highland Church of Christ, where they have served in Children/Youth ministry and currently teach a Young Professional class.

Daryl is passionate about the success and mission of AISD. He is honored to represent the students, parents and teachers of AISD. They are his top priority and the No. 1 reason he has chosen to serve on the AISD school board.

Vice President 

Cindy Earles, a native Abilenian, was first elected to the Board of Trustees in May 2014. She brings to the Board a lifelong commitment to education as a teacher, parent, volunteer and community leader.
Mrs. Earles is a product of AISD, graduating from Abilene High School in 1973. She received her degree in Education from Abilene Christian University and taught in AISD for three years. While raising four children, she worked as a substitute teacher in the district for an additional 15 years. Her husband, Eddie, is a retired AISD teacher who spent 32 years in the classroom. Three of the Earles’ children – Jamie, Katey and Brody – are AISD graduates and the youngest, Molly, is a student at Abilene High.

Mrs. Earles has served as a volunteer and community leader in numerous areas, mainly in the area of education. She has been active in local PTA organizations and served four years on the Texas PTA State Board. Most recently, she spent 12 years as a member of the AISD District-Wide Consultation Committee in which she served as chairman for 11 years. Mrs. Earles has also been a member of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce’s Education Council and Teacher of the Year Committee and the Abilene Preservation League’s Railroad Festival Committee.

The Earles family attends Hillcrest Church of Christ where she teaches a Bible class for 4-year-olds.

Secretary

Angie Wiley, a public education advocate and community volunteer, was elected to the Abilene ISD Board of Trustees in 2016.

Mrs. Wiley and her husband, Rob, have lived in Abilene for 20-plus years and have raised and proudly educated their three children, Kristen (2009), Marcus (2012), and Elizabeth (2015) through Abilene ISD. Rob is a local pediatrician and serves as the district physician. Angie grew up in Hale Center, near Lubbock, and is a graduate of Hardin-Simmons University (BBA 1986). After graduation, she earned a teaching certificate and taught school in San Antonio and Oklahoma City before returning to Abilene in 1995.

Angie has served as president of the Abilene Education Foundation, during which she had the opportunity to serve teachers, students and families through AEF’s programs, grants, and scholarships. She served as president of parent organizations at Austin Elementary, Lincoln Middle School, and Mann Middle School, turning into a tennis mom and soccer mom at Abilene High School. In 2013, Angie served on the District Wide Facilities Assessment Committee in preparation for the recent bond approval. She is currently a member of the Hendrick Medical Foundation, Advisory Board of the Abilene Education Foundation, and Hardin-Simmons Academic Foundation. Angie and Rob serve and worship at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church.

Assistant Secretary

Bill Enriquez was appointed to the Abilene ISD Board of Trustees in January 2016. He has lived in Abilene all of his life and attended Fannin Elementary, Mann Middle School and graduated from Abilene High School. He received his degree in Business Administration from McMurry University. He is self-employed in automotive and real estate sales.

Bill has been an active volunteer and mentor in AISD for many years. He has served on many Abilene ISD committees and task force groups. He is a past president of two PTA’s and has served on campus parent advisory boards, leadership teams and role model mentor programs.

His community involvement is also extensive as he has served on the Abilene Philharmonic Board, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Development Corporation of Abilene, Hispanic Leadership Council, Hispanic Business Committee and several others. In 2015, Bill was honored as the Volunteer Citizen of the Year by KTXS-TV and West Texas Utilities.

Bill’s wife Tina is a Reading and English teacher at Clack Middle School. They have two children that attended Abilene schools – Rick who is an X-ray and CAT Scan technician, and Heather, a Registered Nurse. They have five grandchildren who have attended or are currently attending AISD schools.

Bill truly cares about the Abilene ISD students, teachers and support staff and will work hard to do what is best for our school district.

Board Member

Derek Hood began his term on the AISD Board of Trustees in May 2020.

Hood graduated from Abilene High School in 1986 where he was a two-sport varsity letterman in football and track and field. He won the Golden A Award as a senior and was the co-editor of the Flashlight, the AHS yearbook. He graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1991 with a bachelor of science in secondary education.

he spent 11 years in public education, serving as a teacher and coach in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford, Ector County and Keller school districts. He also spent 15 years coaching track and field and cross country in both junior college and ACU. He was at Bethany College from 1999-2000 and was the head cross country coach and associate head track and field coach at ACU from 2005-08 while his brother, Don D. Hood, served as the head track and field coach. Hood led the men’s cross country team to back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships (2006-2007), and he was the 2007 National Coach of the Year.

He comes from a family of educators: his mother, Betty Ann, taught in the AISD Head Start program, and his father, Don W., was a high school teacher / coach before becoming a collegiate head track and field coach. He won nine team national championships at ACU. Both of his brothers, Joel and Don D. Hood, have served as public education teachers and coaches.

He is married to Lex Ann, who is a high school science teacher. Their three children – Aubrie, Morgan and Hayden – are all graduates of ACU. Currently employed by NextEra Energy Resources as the Supervisor of Land Services, Hood has been heavily involved in the Abilene community, serving on the Frontier Texas! Executive board, working with the Abilene Sports Alliance, Taylor Elementary School, and the Abilene Cactus Lions Club. He also recently completed the AISD Ambassador Academy.

Rodney Goodman, a veteran of the Abilene Fire Department and longtime community servant began his term on the AISD Board of Trustees in May 2020.

Goodman grew up in Washington state before moving to Abilene to attend Abilene Christian University where he graduated with a BBA in Accounting. Goodman has served the citizens of Abilene as a firefighter with the Abilene Fire Department for the last 34 years. He is currently an EMT-Advanced and Captain at station 8. He also works part-time as the Finance and Operations Director for the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature.

Goodman is heavily involved in the community and currently serves as a Lunch Buddy with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. He has been involved with Thomas Elementary, Lincoln Middle School and Craig Middle School PTO’s. He was a past AISD Boundary Committee member. He has been a coach, manager, and/or treasurer with Key City Little League, Abilene South Junior League and Abilene Youth Basketball Association. In addition, he was a scout volunteer and treasurer with Boy Scout Troop 232. Goodman also served as a trustee and chair of the Abilene Firemen’s Relief and Retirement Fund.

Goodman is married to Laura, an AISD dyslexia interventionist. They have three children, Karsten, Katelyn and Kenzie, all graduates of Abilene High School and AC. Goodman and his wife are members of Hillcrest Church of Christ where they serve as university life group sponsors.

Dr. Danny E. Wheat began his service on the Abilene Independent School Board in 2002. He and his wife, Betsi, have lived in Abilene since 1986, and have two children, Jenny and Philip, both graduates of Abilene High School. Both Dr. and Mrs. Wheat are active in PTA, Volunteers in Public Schools, and other school organizations in which their children participate. In addition, Dr. Wheat has served on the board of Abilene Junior/Senior League and is active as an adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America. Dr. Wheat and his family are members and serve our Lord through First Baptist Church, Abilene. He serves as a volunteer for Love and Care Ministries.

Dr. Wheat graduated from Galena Park High School, located in the Houston metroplex, in 1974. Undergraduate studies were taken at San Jacinto Junior College and College of the Ozarks. Dr. Wheat earned his Bachelor of Medical Sciences in 1979, and his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine in 1984 from the California College of Podiatric Medicine located in San Francisco, California. He completed his internship at San Francisco General Hospital in 1984 and his residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Waco in 1986. In 1986, Dr. Wheat, along with his brother, established Abilene Foot Care Associates. P.C., serving as President.

Dr. Wheat is on the staff of Hendrick Medical Center, Baylor Extended Care Hospital, Abilene Regional Medical Center, Medical Mall Surgical Center, Eastland Memorial Hospital, and Coronado Nursing Center. He is board certified Fellow of the American Academy of Wound Management as a Certified Wound Specialist. In addition, Dr. Wheat serves on the Physician Advisory Committee at the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, the Musculoskeletal Department Committee at Hendrick Medical Center and the Department of Surgery Committee at Abilene Regional Medical Center.
