EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Published – October 21, 2022

According to LAist, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) voted 3 – 2 in favor of banning Critical Race Theory (CRT) and similar curricula from being taught in district schools on April 5, 2022.

Board President Carrie Buck was one of two members who voted against the ban. She denied that the district’s curriculum ever had any element of CRT within it.  Buck claims that “this resolution is politically driven, and it serves to ban and censor.”

LAist reports that over a hundred students against the ban “emailed [Buck], rallying against the ruling. She said it’s the first time she’s seen solidarity from the student body on that level.”

Board member Leandra Blades opposed Buck’s stance and said, who stated “I don’t want my politics. I don’t want your politics. I don’t want anybody’s politics in [school].”

In light of the ban, California State University Fullerton (CSUF) is no longer sending student-teachers to (PYLUSD) schools, according to LAist. CSUF Dean Lisa Kirtman said that sending students to schools in the district would put the “college in conflict with its goals.” CSUF, according to Kirtman, seeks to provide student-teachers with “pedagogical approaches rooted in diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, race and gender theories, cultural linguistic studies, social emotional well-being, and tenets of Critical Race Theory.”

Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) is located in northeast Orange County, California. The district enrolls 24,000 students and has 34 campuses.
