EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Published – March 26, 2024

Scott County School District 2 (SCSD2) terminated a district administrator for allegedly misappropriating district funds.

WDRB News said, “After a monthslong investigation, [SCSD2] fired its [CFO] after accusations of gross mismanagement of taxpayer dollars. Casey Brewster, who also served as assistant superintendent, was fired during a public meeting on Thursday [March 21, 2024].”

WDRB continued, “Among the many allegations made in the board investigation, the district did not have the money to meet payroll in June and December of [2023]. Checks written to a construction company for work bounced.”

However, the source said investigation documentation did not reveal where the money went or how it was spent.

Brewster stands accused of mishandling more than $5 million. An audit conducted by the Indiana State Board of Accounts found that “Management had not established a proper system of internal controls,” according to WDRB.

The district’s accounts are reportedly overdrawn by hundreds of thousands of dollars, with no indication of how funds were appropriated.

Brewster — who planned to retire in July 2024 but was forced to leave outright after allegations surfaced — has denied any wrongdoing.

WDRB said, “Brewster is not accused of stealing or misusing the money for personal gain … The board believes he simply mismanaged the money and failed to tell the board, raising questions about how no one on the board, or administration, failed to see the problem.”
