Waunakee Community School District
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Updated – January 17, 2023
In November 2022, the Waunakee Board of Education voted 5-2 to adopt an “Equity Statement” drafted by the board’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
The Equity Statement is displayed under the ‘Our Mission and Vision’ tab on the district website and reads:
“The Waunakee Community School District embraces the differences among our students, staff, and families. We work to provide a safe environment with access to resources, opportunities, and instruction for all students to reach their full potential in the classroom and beyond. We strive to create a culture of dialogue, acceptance, and inclusion. We are committed to engaging all students so that they may thrive academically, socially, and emotionally in an ever-changing multicultural society.”
The two dissenting votes, Jack Heinemann and Ted Frey, said they voted no because they object to the use of the term “equity.”

The Waunakee Community School District used a “wheel of power/privilege” drawing for an 8th grade ELA assignment. This is just one example of newer “programs” that districts are trying to implement into their systems. Recently, parents participated in a Curriculum Committee Meeting to ask if the district supports this assignment.

There are additional assignments the district is trying to implement such as the “Justified Anger Program.” These are located in the Social Studies category of the Summer 2022 Curriculum Writing Requests.
The district also previously posted “anti-racism resources,” specifically, “resources to white people and parents.” The publicly accessible external link was removed; however, you can still access the document here.
